What Problems Do Cummins Diesel Engines Have?

A Cummins diesel engine brought into RDI PowerDodge and RAM trucks have used Cummins engines since 2007. These diesel engines are reliable and perfect for a personal or work truck. They come in different models, like Cummins ISB, ISC, ISL, X, ISM, and QSR.

However, like any other engine (diesel or gas), Cummins have issues requiring diesel engine repair, especially when they get a lot of miles. They mostly experience problems with emissions, head gaskets, and turbochargers.

These are not the only issues, though. These are just the common issues we see in the earlier years of these engines.

DPF Clogs

The Cummins engines often have issues with the diesel particulate filter (DPF) clogging.

Chrysler does not use diesel exhaust fluid (DEF). Its engines run richer (with more fuel) to reduce NOx emissions. Because of the richness of the air-to-fuel mixture, the engine produces more soot, clogging the DPF.

In 2013, RAM trucks received DEF and SCR emissions control systems to reduce DPF issues. These systems minimize diesel particulates so that the DPF doesn’t clog nearly as much as it did in earlier years.

Contact RDI Power in Brooksville, FL If you have trouble with the DPF or DEF systems.

Turbocharger Failure

The earlier model of Cummins engines had issues with turbochargers. While many of those issues have been corrected, you can still count on some to have problems.

RDI Power provides diesel engine repair for turbocharger issues, including:

  • Leaky oil seals
  • Sticking VGT parts
  • Worn turbo bearings
  • Turbine wheel or compressor damage

You are more likely to see these issues as Cummins engine ages.

Head Gasket Issues

The Cummins produces a lot of power and torque, which strains the engine. The engine must have high cylinder pressures to get that high torque and power. While head gasket issues don’t pop up constantly, they do enough so that they’re noticeable. And because of the cost, this is worth mentioning.

As part of diesel engine repair, we can upgrade the fire rings and head studs to help keep the heads from lifting off the engine. Our experienced technicians can repair the head gasket and make the necessary upgrades to reduce the risk of future head gasket issues.
