Load Rating
The load rating tells you how much weight you can carry. A tire’s sidewall is flexible, which means that it can sustain only so much weight on it. Heavier vehicles will have reinforced construction and are more expensive – and it’s one of the reasons semis often use recaps.
The problem with recaps is that they easily separate – thus the “alligators” you see along the side of the highway. The numbers on the sidewall of the tire tell you several things, including minimum air pressure, maximum air pressure, maximum load, and other factors. A G-rated tire can handle up to 6,000 pounds and an H-rated tire can handle up to 6,500 pounds at the recommended tire air pressure.
Tire Wear
How your tires wear can tell us a lot about the tires. If they wear in the center only, the air pressure is too high. Wearing evenly on the outside edges only means you don’t have enough air pressure. If the tire wears unevenly on one side, you could have an alignment issue or a suspension issue.
If you notice uneven wear on your tires, contact RDI Power as soon as possible so that we can determine the issue. If you have a suspension issue, waiting could do more damage to your truck’s suspension.
Even Tire Wear
You can tell when you need new tires by using the coin test. Steer tires should be replaced when about 4/32 of an inch of tread is left. Tires in any other position should be replaced at 2/32 of an inch..
If you stick a quarter between the treads with Washington’s head pointing down and can see his whole head, you have 4/32 of an inch left. It’s time for new tires really soon, especially if you do a lot of driving.
While we rarely see ice and snow in Florida, the rain does make the roads slippery. The less tread you have, the easier it is to slip.
We recommend getting new tires when you get to 4/32 of an inch of tread left. Of course, if you are on your way up north during early spring and late fall when you have a pretty good chance of hitting ice and snow, you should never wait until you have 2/32 of an inch of tread.
