The Powerstroke diesel is one of the most common diesel engines on the road today. This engine is found in light and medium-duty Ford trucks. The Powerstroke is a complex diesel engine with advanced electrical systems and fuel system. It’s important that when it’s time for service or repair on your Powerstroke diesel, you’re placing it in the hands of a properly trained, experienced Powerstroke diesel mechanic.

Powerstroke Diesel Maintenance
Like all engines, the Powerstroke diesel has basic maintenance needs in order for it to provide a lifetime of dependable service. These maintenance services include:
- Oil and filter change
- Fuel filter replacement
- Air filter replacement
- Coolant replacement
Paying particular attention to the engine cooling system is paramount on these engines. The EGR coolers and oil coolers are known to stop up on certain models and cause larger problems that can result in repairs such as head gasket replacement or even complete engine replacement.
F-Series Truck Repairs and Maintenance
The Powerstroke engine is wrapped in one of the finest trucks available, the F-Series truck. These trucks come in variants from the F-250 up to the F-750, all of which are available with the Powerstroke engine.

Powerstroke Performance Modifications
RDI Power adheres to EPA requirements regarding performance modifications of diesel engines.
The Powerstroke diesel engine is a fantastic platform for building a high-performance diesel engine. There are many modifications and performance upgrades to get better performance and fuel mileage out of these engines.
- Common performance modifications include:
- Custom performance tunes
- Free-flowing exhaust systems
- Cold air intakes
- Larger turbochargers
- Larger intercoolers
For those that have off-road performance applications such as trucks (and even cars) that are purpose-built for sports like tractor pulls or drag racing, the options available are limitless.

The RDI Power warranty is one of the best in the business. For fleet vehicles, the warranty is 2 years or 24,000 miles. For non-fleet vehicles, the warranty is 3 years or 36,000 miles. This warranty makes us a market leader in the industry.
Powerstroke Diesel Engine Variations
The Powerstroke diesel has been in production since 1994 and has come in 4 basic variations in 3/4 ton and larger trucks and vans. The 7.3L, 6.0L, 6.4L, and 6.7L. Two of these are great engines. The other two have had their challenges.
The Powerstroke is also made in two smaller variants for 1/2 ton pickups and Transit vans. These are the 3.2L and 3.0L.
The 7.3L is widely known as the best of the Powerstroke engines. It was also the first and least powerful of the Powerstroke series. That being said, there are plenty of upgrades available for this engine to increase its power output to today’s standards.
As dependable as this engine is, there are a few common failure points. Those include:
- Camshaft position sensor failure
- Lift pump failure (causes no-start condition)
- Leaking water separator
The 6.0L Powerstroke is one of the variants that has its share of challenges. This engine was introduced in model year 2003 and ran through 2007. It is plagued with problems from the high-pressure oil pump, EGR, and head bolts. This engine can, however, be made into a quite reliable engine.
Common repairs that we do on 6.0L Powerstroke engines include:
- High-pressure oil pump replacement (replaced with the new HPOP with stronger gears and relocated ICP sensor)
- Oil cooler and EGR replacement
- Cleaning the variable geometry turbo exhaust housing
6.0L Powerstroke Bulletproofing
When we “bulletproof” a 6.0, we’re basically removing the weak points of this engine. Bulletproofing includes replacing the oil cooler and EGR cooler with updated components and replacing the factory torque-to-yield head bolts with head studs and a higher quality head gasket. This process makes this otherwise undependable engine into a very good and reliable engine.
The 6.4L Powerstroke is widely known as the worst of the Powerstroke engines. Very often when we see a 6.4, we’re seeing it for replacement. Some of the most common issues we see on 6.4L Powerstrokes here at the RDI shop include:
- Piston ring failure
- Craked pistons
- Turbo seal failures
The 6.7L Powerstroke is a great engine. It is incredibly powerful and very dependable. That being said, it’s not without its issues.
One of the most common issues we see on the 6.7L Powerstroke is the failure of the crankcase breather causing oil leaks. The replacement of this relatively simple part requires removal of the transmission, making it a not so simple repair. On 4×4 trucks, this is amplified by the needed removal of multiple diveshafts and the transfer case.
It’s worth noting that as of this writing, the newest models of the 6.7L Powerstroke produce 475 horsepower and 1050 ft-lbs of torque, making it the most powerful engine in its class.
